My baby boy was born premature on April 6 of this year and the doctor prescribed preemie formula which I had to get overseas. One of the formulas was Similac Special Care, we do not have that one in my country. We do have however, Similar Advance and Neosure. My question can I now give him Similac Advance.

He turned 3 months today, not his adjusted age, (adjusted age is 3 weeks) can I start giving him Similac Advance. He was born weighing 1.87 pounds and he is now at 6 pounds. Grateful to hear from someone soon. He is sucking well and can turn his head. Cannot lift is head as yet when he is lying on his tummy and he cannot roll as yet from his stomach to his back or vice versa. I just want him to grow healthy and strong.

I agree w/ checking with the doctor. In the meantime, my thought is that the preemie formula has higher caloric concentration to promote faster weight growth. Adjusted age of 3 weeks and only six pounds, I'd probably stay on the preemie formula.

My 30-week preemie was mainly breastfed, but when she was discharged from the NICU we were fortifying w/ the preemie formula. She gained weight really fast at home so we quickly stopped the extra fortification--she was 9lb on her due date. If she hadn't been such a chunker, I'm sure we would have continued with the fortification.

Danna, l'm a preemie mom and have never heard of a special formula for preemies. I agree with Jodi, though, check with your doctor before changing his formula, especially since this one was prescribed.

Thanks Jodi. I have been calling her because we just recently came home so I have not yet started going to a pediatrician but I am considering visiting one this month. Need some guidance with him. All the best.

Danna, I am assuming, given his special needs as a premmie, you are still having regular visits with your pediatrician. I would suggest you give him/her a call, as he knows your baby better than a bunch of women on the internet.
