My baby seems hungry but only likes a few foods

My baby is seven months old and I breastfeed. I am having trouble figuring out what to feed him as far as solids go. He seems hungry and interested in food, when I first offered it he opened his mouth and leaned in to the spoon eating eagerly. He doesn't like many baby foods, but chokes on the teeniest bits of mashed or soft foods. He is really fussy when he's not eating any solids. Any suggestions? Thought about baby led weaning but as I said he chokes and gags on anything that is not pureed..

I wonder why he seems so hungry? Maybe not enough breatmilk? Before I started the solids he was extremely fussy and as soon as I started he calmed down. I can't supplement with a bottle because he refuses the bottle. He will eat homemade sweet potatoes if I puree them and add a little water. He does like baby oatmeal with breastmilk but I am finding it hard to produce any extra milk for the cereal. He weighs about 23-24 pounds.

Until 12 months, solid food is only for taste and texture. They still rely on breastmilk or formula for their nutrition.
Most babies will only have a couple of teaspoons of food at a time while they get used to the different tastes.
It's also easy to make your own baby food. Cook potato's, carrots, sweet potato's, etc and then mash them yourself. Avocado is also a good one. You can make a batch and then freeze in smaller amounts so you don't waste food.
He will take a while to get used to chewing instead of drinking so don't wean him until he is over 12 months at least.
