Babies that don’t poop for several days
Once your baby is about one month old, he may start having fewer bowel movements. If your baby is breastfed, he may go several days to a week without having a bowel movement. This is nothing to worry about. Exclusively breastfed babies rarely have problems with constipation. If he goes longer than a week, he seems to be in pain, or if you are concerned, call your pediatrician.
Formula-fed babies poops slow down at about a month as well. However, formula is more likely to cause constipation than breast milk. Most formula fed babies will have about one bowel movement a day. Stools should be soft. If you notice your baby’s stools are firm or hard and pellet-like, he may be constipated. If your baby goes longer than two or three days without a bowel movement and he is formula fed, you should give your pediatrician a call.

I had the same thing happen with my son... As long as he is having wet diapers it is nothing to worry about... their systems are still new remember that. I dont think most adults have a BM every day and yes i know that they make it seem like he has to have one but in truth there are days when my son would have one and then other days he has 2 to 3 in one day.
In all i wouldnt worry too much it isnt a bad bad thing it happens quite often. I remembered i freaked out when my son didnt have a BM for like 3 or so days and when I did call his dr they told me it happen quite offten and that his system just might not need to have one... I hope this helps a little bit

Although with a baby that young, 2 days is not too bad, I would massage his abs and move his legs like he is riding a bike a few times a day. That should help resolve the matter. Otherwise, if you are nursing then perhaps something you've eaten has caused this reaction in him. Pay close attention to your diet and when he poops take note of what you ate that day and the day before. Also take note of what you ate when he didn't poop. Try to avoid those foods that cause the constipation in your son. Hope this helps.

PLEASE do not give prune juice to a 4 week old baby!!!
My daughter was breastfed and regularly went 3-4 days between BMs (at one point she went as long as 8 days). It is entirely normal. And it is also normal for you to worry about it :) My doctor and baby nurse reassured me that, with breastfed babies, it is not uncommon for them to go up to 2 weeks between BMs. The time frame is different with formula fed infants also, but if it's only been 2 days and your baby is not in pain or distress, they will be ok.
Talk to your doctor and I'm sure they will reassure you that your baby is fine. My daughter didn't start having daily BMs until she started solids.

I have twin boys and the oldest twin had this problem until I found a MD who also was into holistic medicine. He suggested 1/4 teaspoon of flax seed oil in formula and wait about 6 hours, it should work if not up the dosage to 1/2 teaspoon. Since your son is so young I am sure 1/4 teaspoon is enough it worked for my son when he was 6 weeks. After about 6 hours everything starting coming out, it wasnt runny and he seemed relieved to finally have a bm after that I made sure to put 1 drop or about 1/8 teaspoon of flax seed oil or cod liver oil in his formula every other day and we never had a problem again. At 2 years old I still give my twins oil and everything is running smoothly :-) Also please make sure to give your baby water EVERYDAY. I know most MDs state they dont need it but yes they do and that helps to keep them regular also.

Hiya! Apparently this is really normal! My son would sometimes go for a week without a pooey nappy and then on day 7 he would soend all day pooing. My midwife reassured me that this is perfectly normal for some kids... it's just the way they are.
I would only be worried if he seems to be upset/unsettled/in pain.

Another thing you can try with a formula feed baby one table spoon of the dark color corn syrup. I know it sounds weird but my sister used it alot for her kids and it worked wonders she said. I bought some so I had it on hand but haven't had to use it yet. The OB nurse in our town told us that if your baby is a breast feed baby there is no way your baby can be constipated and that sometimes her kids would hold their poo for a whole week. Just once they finally went you needed to make sure you had a very good diaper on cause it would be a major blow out.

You don't need to worry if you're breastfeeding. It's normal. My baby boy could go 5 or more days without a bowel movement.
If you're formula feeding try giving some water as well as milk. Hope this helps...if you're still worried contact your maternal health nurse and she'll give you some advice. Hope this helps

I agree with Nadia. That is what I have done with my girls when breast feeding. I have found that I need to stay clear of peppers when nursing and w/ my 1st daughter I couldn't eat meat with the 3rd I am able to while nursing.

When my daughter was this age she had the same problem. My doctor told me that is was normal and gave a few things to try, if she went longer than two days. The one that worked the best was the sugar water. He had me give her 2 4oz bottles of water with 1tsp of Light Karo Syrup in between her regular formal bottles. She only took one water bottle, but that was enough. I would check with your doctor.

I would not play around with this one.....go to the doctor to make sure of no obstruction.....it's very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous. Might just be the diet, but good to find out for sure for the safety of your child...

Okay, just read some of these other posts. Don't give him prune juice he is WAY!!!! to young for that. It really is normal. My doctor told me not to worry unless it's up to 5 days. Just call your doctor tomorrow, I'm sure he'll tell you something similar. Good luck, mama!!

It's totally normal. Don't fret. :) He'll have bowel movement soon enough. They go through stages but, even I knew this when my little one was "little" and I still had a moment of freak out. It's different when it's your child doing it. Mine is older now and he keeps going on hunger strikes, eat a lot one day not much on the next. I know it's normal but it all goes back to "but it's MY kid doing it now!! freak out". lol

My son has struggled with this since about May 09. We have done the prune juice, watering down the formula 4 scoops for 9oz of water so only one scoop off. He is now on whole milk though. His Doctor recommended that we use Myralax (spelled wrong...I think. LOL) He said to use 1/4 of what the recommended about in for an adult but that we would also have to just play with the dosing. We do Myralax nightly in his bottles and when he doesnt have a BM for 2 days add prune juice during the day to his milk. And always at dinner I have him do some water instead of milk. My son was 14 weeks early so he is adjusted age 10months almost 3 weeks old but we just try to work with it some days are good days and others are bad. I have also had to give him Suppository (I think thats also spelt wrong Sorry) that I've bought at the Walmart. His doctor said that this was also ok. We only do this when its been about 5 days or so and also it depends on if he is comfortable or not. Also Vaseline on your pinky and message his opening DO NOT go in to far. This just helps stimulate everything. I hope these help. Dont worry though. CJ went 11 days without having a BM but he was okay.
