My child is lonely at school

My 7 year old daughter keeps telling me that she's lonely at school. She's not being bullied and she says people are friendly but she has no-one to play with and wanders around on her own at playtime. I suggested she ask if she could join in with others and she tells me they say no to her. I know she's not perfect, she can be sometimes a little aloof and intense but no child 'Ive ever met is perfect, they all come with good and bad points. But she is also bright and imaginative and I can't believe there's no-one who wants to be her friend. It breaks my heart to hear it because I know these experiences at school can set a pattern and form self esteem issues which haunt you for life. She asks me whats wrong with her and I tell her nothing, maybe just that the special friends she would so love to meet are just not at her school right now. Has anyone else got the same problem and how do you deal with it? I don't want her growing up thinking no-one likes her.
