Hi, my son was awarded Ssi benefits in 2011 and received a lump sum that was put in a dedicated account. I was given different reasons as to what the money can be spent on and recently did his review with the SSA. I made purchases from the dedicated account on bedroom set for my son along with special bedding and humidifier for his room. The reason for the purchase price s we lived at that time in a apartment complex that got bed bugs and we lost all furniture. So now ss is saying I might have to pay back money they feel was not allowed for such purchases. Can anyone help me with this I am so confused.

I was given a sheet of paper that said for medical and educational training. Anything else would need prior approval. Well I called and asked about purchasing a bed set due to us moving out of a bed bug infested Apartment building to a safer one because of his severe asthma and she said as long as it was being used for him it was OK. In the guideline book online it also states any furnishings needing to be replaced for health reasons was OK and now as we do the review the new caseworker now says some of these purchases are most likely not going to qualify. Now if I have to pay back some of the money how does that work.

Well, was furniture and bedding on the list of allowable items, or not? If not, then you will probably have to repay the monies spent on those items.

When you first start receiving benefits like this, you are given written guidelines as to how the monies are to be spent. If you lose those written guidelines, you can always call for another copy, and you can always call prior to a specific purchase to see whether or not it is allowed, or if an exception can be made.
