My daughter Emma was born at 34 weeks and she had a trach placed at birth. During her 7 weeks in the nicu they told me they would take the trach out by 6 months but her ENT told me definetely not before 1 year of age......does anyone know why they don't take trachs out before 1 year of age?

I agree with the mom above....I believe the reasoning behind it is at a year they are a little more aware and able to participate in the process of coming off a trach.

Babies on trachs often become dependent on using it to stimulate breathing and need to be trained to breathe without them. Good luck, I hope it all works out for you!
