Hello moms.

I am a mother of 3, my oldest is 16 and she has a boyfriend. She has dated other boys before but this is her first serious relationship. She knows all about sex and the severity of it, but I have expressed to her that I would want her to wait for sex until she's done with high school. But I also know that things happen. Her boyfriend is 17, almost 18 and he is an intelligent boy. I allow my daughter to make her own decisions because she is 16, not a child. I do think she should have birth control just to be safe, I don't know if she is having sex or not, but you can never be too sure. Should I confront her about this?

Believe it or not there are teens that have a serious relationship with a boyfriend and don't have sex. If you were my mom and told me that I should get on birth control I would be VERY insulted! It would also change our relationship and I would be more selective in what I shared with you. Instead of telling her to get on birth control why not help support her and be a parent that helps guide her into making the right decisions. Instead of letting YOUR fears get in the way why not have a relationship with her and talk with her about what is going on in her life. Also birth control is not 100% effective so she can still get pregnant. AND it does not protect against STD ' S.

@Sarah,

I never thought of it that way. But you're right. I just don't want to risk her getting pregnant and then look back and think that I could have gotten her on birth control. You know?
