My daughter is nearing 17 months.. is it bad that she doesn't quite know how to feed herself? she is just starting to get holding it correctly, but not necerarily getting the food on the sppon and in her mouth without turning it and dropping the food?

She doesn't know how to feed herself, or she doesn't know how to feed herself with a spoon? Those are very different. If she can't pick things up with her fingers and put them in her mouth, I'd be concerned, but just being clumsy with utensils is normal for that age.

If I remember right, my son was pretty good at using a fork at 17 months, but it was 19 months before he was able to manage a spoon. Mostly I just cut pieces so he could pick them up with his fingers and eat them. I didn't really care or work very hard to teach him because I like our mealtimes to be happy times, but he figured it out anyway. Two things that helped: putting some yogurt into a plastic cup instead of a bowl so he could scrape the spoon against the side all the way up, and feeding him porridge that had been mixed with yogurt instead of milk so that it was really thick. That way it stuck to the spoon even if he held it sideways!
