My Daughter started saying "Crap"

Oh Lanie, you are hilarious!!!
Using the word "crap" will no more lead to drinking and smoking than swimming will lead to pregnancy, but thanks for the laugh!
If you truly DID react in the way you describe, well, that wasn't very adult of you.
Nancy, simply enforce language limits in your home. Your daughter is perfectly normal!

Lanie--"Crap" is not as bad as the "F" word and a lot of others. It does not always lead to cursing, smoking and other bad things. I do not know where you get the idea that it does. My son was respectful when speaking out at his grandparents home, my home, and others homes. As he got older he did learn to use a few curse words but he kept them at bay when around others. A few times he slipped around me and apologized for it. He would even say, excuse me for saying this but...and then he would say his words including the swear words. He uses them off and on now as an adult but he does not smoke, do drugs, drink heavily, or anything else. But a parent should put a limit on language allowed in the home but tossing a phone out of the car window because of that is by far way too expensive a thing to do. You could have put the phone up or cut off the service for it. My suggestion is to talk about acceptable word usage in the home and come up with a consequence for it if it continues to be used. But I guarentee that at 14 years old, most kids are swearing when not in a parent's range of hearing.

Hey Nancy! Clearly you need to set some verbal boundaries in your house because "Crap" is a bad word that can lead to cursing, smoking, etc. When my daughter said crap, I threw her phone out of the car window and she didn't talk for a week! Just do that and she'll learn her lesson.
