my eldest boy is 17 months old and his soft spot is twice as big as my youngest sons who is 4 months - are there any health implications if his soft spot doesn't close up?

I think to have peace of mind you should mention this to a doctor. Most soft spots do not close up completely until about the age of 3.

Well, with a response like that I would be looking for another doctor! Seriously, you might want to get a second opinion if your current doc is going to treat you and your questions so flippantly! I would certainly THINK there would be health concerns--that just seems like a logical assumption--but it would certainly be nice to know what those concerns might be. Again, I would look into getting a second, and hopefully straight-forward, opinion.

Yes unfortunately our doctors aren't very forth coming even when you ask a direct question - when I asked them of the health implications should it not close up they simply said "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it" which leads me to believe that there are concerns if it doesn't have tried researching on the web but can't seem to find anything of any use

Unfortunately with doctors if you don't ask the question, they won't always provide the full scope of a problem. You might try calling and asking your doctor about the concerns should the soft spot not close. Otherwise plan on that being your first question at his check-up!

Your question is a medical one that can only be adequately answered by a doctor. I suggest talking to your pediatrician for family doc about your concerns. Good luck!
