My first grader has a hard time with reading and phonics

My son is 6 years old and going into first grade however, he has a hard time with reading and maintaining information such as sight words. I am a single working parent but work with him daily on sight words but the next day he will not remember or need to pronounce the words. I had him tested and he did not qualify for any additional services rather they stated his IQ testing was that of a gifted kid but he barely made it through kindergarden. I did private tutoring and still he struggles to read and recognize words. What should I do I am so at lost and praying for an answer on how I can help him.

Not reading at 6 is not that unusual. Of my four, two were reading by first grade and two took a bit longer. I agree with Shawnn, practicing and encouraging him will be helpful. What do you mean by "he barely made it thru kindergarten" what criteria did he not meet?

Practice makes perfect, as they say, and each child advances as a different pace.

Be patient. He will get this. One question, though...have you tested his vision?
