At that age my son just wanted my time. I looked at bedtime for him as a long range goal. Eventually I would want him to put himself to bed when he was oh.....around 12. :) What I did is...he had a bath, brushed teeth, then he could select as many books as was equal to his age. So your son being 5 would be able to select 5 books. I read every book to him. After the last book was read, I would sit in the chair in his room reading MY book (a book I was currently reading) until he fell asleep. We did this every night. I found we both looked forward to spending that time together every night. And I also enjoyed spending a few minutes reading my book. Now he is about to be 12 and no issues going to bed. :) I hope this helps. Oh...now he reads on his own before bedtime.

You need to set up a routine for going to bed such as:

Bath.
Brush teeth.
Read story.
Lights out.
Close the door.

If he gets up and keeps on trying to stay up all night repeat putting to bed and closing door. He will eventually learn to stay in his bed even if he does not sleep.
