My son since age 18 has had a marijuana drug problem. He has become so violent that I got a restraining order and I saw him on my birthday at Venice Beach. he will not get help and is in denial. What can I do he got in trouble with the law for assaulting another person and I believe they gave him probation and community service. what can i do to help him if he doesn't want to listen to anyone?

Ruth, this is a common misconception among parents of addicts, and, (at least in your situation as described) YOU did not fail him. HE made choices on his own.

May I suggest that you look into Al-anon? Its a wonderful support source, and will help you learn coping mechanisms for this ride that you're on with your son.

thank you. I just pray every day that he is safe. he is living homeless at the beach. I feel like sometimes it is my fault. I was a single working mom when he was growing up and he was honor roll and then his grandma died and she was close to him. I feel like I failed him. I have the guilt also of my younger daughter who was his older sister that died 10 years ago.

Nothing. You could, however, do some research, because if your son is violent, he's most likely doing drugs OTHER than marijuana.

Otherwise, unless he's ready to get clean, it will be a waste of time to try to force him. He must hit rock bottom on his own, and make the decision to clean up on his own.,

You can't. All you can do is let him know you are there if he needs you and that you love him, but NOT if it is going to enable him. Continue to encourage him to get help. Talk to a counsellor yourself to get support, too. They may be able to provide you with guidance and support for what will be a very difficult road.
