My son is 4 1/2 years old. My daughter almost 3 years old.
My husband is from Jamaica and the only family he has here lives about 3 hours away and we never see them. My family is hardly a part of our lives either.
He wants to send them to Jamaica for the summer months.
We spent 2 months down there when my son was 2 1/2 and daughter 9 months old and his family did not take much interest in them and never offered to care for them.
We told his sister to watch them 2x when we out ourselves.
They are not accustomed to cliffs or mean dogs or the way people drive there.
I know in my heart they are waaaaay too young to go by themselves.
What age do you think this may be appropriate?
How can you prepare them for this?

We live in Canada.
Yes, he wants to send them to Jamaica.
I told him no. End of conversation.

Oh wait... Jamaica is further away from you than the 3 hours... correct? Sorry, not sure I read that right. I would not be sending them to another country w/out me... period.

If i was not going... my kids would not be going. 3 hours away for an entire summer w/ people they barely know? No way, no how... not going to happen. IF the family were involved in their lives I would 'think' about a weekend at this age and up to a week in 2-3 years from now. The entire summer? Not until they were teenagers... and maybe not even then. If the family is not involved in their lives... they wouldn't be going w/out me for any length of time.
