my lazy teenager

Did this just start this year? Is he having any other issues that may signal depression or some other internal struggle... or perhaps some bullying going on? I would look into something like this to see if there are any extenuating circumstances causing the behavior that can be dealt w/ by some outside help. Other than that... I agree entirely w/ Jodi. Don't do your 'job', you don't get 'paid'. You have to provide him w/ a safe, clean space to sleep, clothes (basic stuff) to wear, and food (again... basic for nutrition) to eat. Just about anything and everything else is a privilege he needs to earn.

If we, as adults, don't do our jobs, we don't get paid.
Your son's job is to go to school and make an effort at getting his education. It is his job, just as we have our job. If he isn't doing his job, then he doesn't get paid. Therefore all those lovely privileges he has suddenly disappear because he can't "afford" them. I'd be taking it all away and explaining that he can only have those when he actually does his job.
