My name is Carolyn May. I am almost 61 years old (birthday is this month). I am on disability and have just gotten final custody of my 14 year old granddaughter. I have tried to work a bit but I'm afraid they will cut my health benefits because of it so I had to quit. I want to work, but the government makes sure we stay in poverty.

The government isn't making sure you stay IN poverty, it is making sure you stay OUT of it.

Disability benefits are for people who cannot work to support themselves. They will never make those people rich, but they do keep the person from starving to death or living on the streets.

If you are able to work to support yourself, you do not need the disability benefits because you can get a job that will pay enough to support you, and eventually, depending on the choices you make, enough to rise out of poverty.
