She now has no hair at the front and has started pulling at the back, she is mostly doing this in her sleep and we have tried given her a doll with hair to pull it didn't work, She wakes up most nights gets into bed with me and tries to pull my hair. I have cut both mine and her hair short but she is still twisting it around her fingers tightly then pulling it out by the root. She had beautiful long hair and it is breaking my heart I am at my wits end and don't know what to do bar shaving her hair which is very drastic. We have to wait until October for a paediatrician appointment by then she could be bald!! Has any one else ever come accross this? I am a Mum of four, she is my youngest nd I really thought I had seen everything until this happened, please help!!!

I think this is called trichotillomania, or trichotillosis. Lots of theories but not too many answers. One idea puts it into the OCD cluster of behaviours. Try not to worry too much. Some kids pull the hair out of their eyebrows and eyelashes, too! One of my kids did this and I just shaved her head. I know it seems drastic but I kept her head shaved for a few months and she just "got out of the habit". In other respects she was a beautiful child, so please don't let it worry you. My mum still remembers when she used to do this and we often have a giggle about it. Good luck.

My daughter has played with her hair since she was a baby but I was never worried because I have to play with my hair to go to sleep but about six months ago she's been pulling clumps out an going around er heard I have shaved it twice and she still playing with it even though there's nothing there iv been not giving it attention lately and put a hat on her at night she says she wants to stop but she can't.. Is there anything else I can do ??? I had to have it cuz he cut it but she wasn't pulling it out at that point should I do it again and hope it breaks the habit I'm Just worried she will continue cuz she's never stopped playing with it ???

I don't know whether it damages the hair follicle if she does it for an extended period of time but my girl did it for a few months before I realised that shaving was the only way I was going to stop it. Her hair grew back just fine!
