Have you just started a new form of birth control or is there any chance you could be pregnant (if you're having sex... the answer is yes)? Call the doctor to get checked out.

Caroline, this thread is pretty old. A long period can happen ounce and a while, if it concerns you or you feel unwell, call your doctor.

I'm on my 18th day as well. I'll be seeing my doctor tomorrow but doing some research online to see if there are others experiencing the same. I've had heavy bleeding, clotting, and intense cramps since my periods started 30 years ago (was a late bloomer and didn't get my period until a few months before my 16th birthday) but the past two years things are just getting ridiculous. My periods can be anywhere from 5 to 10 days (today makes day 18) and can start any time between 18 to 32 days from the beginning of my last one. The clotting is so bad now, and I now start cramping up to 5 days before it starts. So there have been a couple of months when I was either experiencing cramps or having my cycle every day.

I also have zero faith in my doctor and my mother AND younger sister passed away from "female" cancers. My mom passed away six years ago from aggressive cancer of the vulva and surrounding lymph nodes. The most alarming is my sister passing away at the age of 42 from Cervical Cancer that wasn't detected even though she had regular PAP tests and two ultrasounds. The tumour was prolapsed so it was only found because my sister pretty much demanded an MRI. When it was diagnosed she was already stage four and less than a year later it had spread to her breast, brain, and cerebral fluid.

I fully expect that getting an MRI (have had an ultrasound) will be quite a battle.

This happened to me once I bled for a month straight finally the light bleeding turned into the normal heavy flow and it hasn't happened again since and this was 2 years ago. I did make an appointment but by the time they got me in everything was cleared up and done. The nurse practitioner still had me take a blood test to see if I miss carried but it came back negative.

I would still try to get in to see a doctor or nurse practitioner if it will get you in faster, I told them I didn't care who I saw just get me in.

Yeah, so did I until I had been bleeding 'weird' for over a week and my NP told me to take a test and it was positive right away... I was miscarrying.

Bleeding for 18 days is definitely a reason to go to the doctor...
