Today I was told my son my 22 year old son has autism! 😭
I don't even know what that word means.
Can anyone help me?

It means you now have answers. Just because he now has a diagnosis does not mean he has changed. What it does mean is that you now have answers to how he is and why. It is a start to a new beginning. Google the word, talk to your son, seek out counseling.

If he's made it to 22 years w/out a diagnosis it's clearly not too severe. I'm curious what prompted either of you to seek a diagnosis at this point. He could potentially benefit from some counseling depending on what his particular struggles are, but unless he has also been declared mentally incompetent... any therapies would be up to him to seek... or not.

Obviously it's not very severe or it would have been picked up many years ago.
You have raised him this far, why are you so distraught? It's not a death sentence.

How did he get to be 22 years old without a diagnosis?
