My son became badly constipated after starting solids. Help!

I was originally going to wait until my son was 6 months old before starting baby food but the doctor told me it would actually be beneficial to start sooner. Just a couple days after starting the baby food, my son was unable to use the bathroom without screaming. We have tried prune juice and corn syrup but nothing seems to help. Its been 4 days now since he's had a normal movement. I'm thinking about taking him off of solids and waiting until he is 6 months old like I had originally planned. Any advice?

i would definitely hold off on the solids for now. the AAP, and WHO recommend that any babe under 6 months should have nothing other than breastmilk or formula...anything before then may cause problems.

i would wait until your little one is 6 months, and i would reintroduce solids very slowly. cereal, bananas, applesauce, carrots, dairy, and bread/pasta are all highly likely to cause constipation so be careful with them in the beginning. avocado is a GREAT first food as it has a very, very low risk of allergy, has tons of nutrients, and lots of healthy fat...and its delicious.

in the mean time, put him on his back and try cycling his legs. a warm bath can help relax him. massage his tummy gently in a clockwise motion starting at the bellybutton and moving outwards.

This is ery common when you switch over to solids. Buy some 100% apple juice and mix it with cooled boiled water this works very well and within a couple of hours. Also dilute the solids down to contain more fluid to make it easier to pass. My daughter was put on solids at 10 weeks by our doctors as she had a terrible problem with all kinds of milk. An ounce of the apple mix a day sorted her out no problem at all. She liked it so much she continued to drink it until she was 18 months old, but it did not have the same affect as she got older.
