My son has a loose tooth and he's had it quite awhile, it's pretty loose but he's very careful not to bite anything there or to bump it. I'm just wondering how long is too long for a tooth to be loose? Could it become a problem for the new tooth coming in? He's afraid of loosing it and having it bleed so he won't wiggle it till it comes out.

My daughter's teeth are loose for months before they come out and her dentist said that's just fine. But if it only hanging on by a thread, you might as well give it a wee tug to bring it out.

As long as the adult tooth isn't already poking through... it's totally fine. If the adult tooth is poking through then it might be worth a trip to the dentist to check it out. My kids have had a couple of teeth pulled due to the adult tooth getting in the way before the baby tooth comes out.

I think as long as it's not hanging by a bare thread, then it's okay to let it loosen gradually. He's likely playing with it with his tongue without realizing it, so I doubt it will be long before it comes out completely.

ETA: baby teeth aren't as strong as our adult teeth, so I really don't think there's any risk of the adult tooth being affected if the baby tooth takes its time coming out.

Thanks ladies, he does have a dentist appointment on Thursday I just thought I would ask, just in case someone thought it would be pulled that way I can mentally prepare him. It's been loose for at least 2-3 months, we'll see what the dentist says! Thanks again.
