My son is 3 years old and has a bad habit of licking his top lip until its raw! Is there anything out there that I can buy to put on it so that when he licks it, it makes him think twice about doing it?

Our son does the same thing and we use carmex. We apply a very good amount when he is asleep and let it set. If your kid is anything like mine, he will rub it off with his hands or shirt if you apply it when they are aware. So I just do it at night and it has helped. Vaseline is good but when its raw like that something medicated feels a lot better.

Hi Christina, try the stuff that helps you stop biting your nails.  It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth but not at all harmful.  A friend of mine used it on his daughters thumb to stop her sucking it.  She was about the same age as your son at the time, so i know it won't  harm him.

You can buy it at any high street chemist and it's not expensive.

Hope this helps....

Hi Christina

jst sum friendly advice your son could b licking them due to a reaction from something cld b anything from wht hes eatin to soaps shampoos or bodywash.

all i can suggest is to use vaseline or lanolin  something to protect the skin and keep in the moisture. u could also take him shopping and get him 2 choose his lipbalm it wil gve him a insentive to apply it himself as well. not the flavoured ones tho it will only increase mre lip sucking.

Another cream that may help is bapanthen is excellent for broken or rashey skin.

hpe this helps gud luck :)

hi i did that same thing when i was a child, i now think i did it cause i was thirsty or my lips were dry. my mother gave me vasiline to put on them, i still to this day use lip balm of some sort every day.  the stuff they put on fingernails might sting raw lips. you should take a photo of his lips when they are raw and show it to him, let him know if he licks his lips they will be saw, or is he not bothered. good luck. i stopped at about 7 in the end.

Hi Christina,

I suggest that you put the same type of liquid (don't know the name) that they use on finger nails of people that bite them.
