This is pretty normal. It sounds like he has learned both his numbers and alphabet rote (i.e. memorised them in order), but hasn't quite truly understood what they mean, or connected the shape of the letter/digit with the name of it. What he is doing is a great start, you have introduced him to the name of them, but now need to focus on connecting that to meaning and shape. It will come eventually with lots of practice.
Keep reading to him, maybe even focus on one letter a week randomly - there are books that can help you with this, or you can just cut out lots of pictures of things starting with the letter and pin them to a pinboard or glue it to some card along with the written word that goes with the picture, practice writing the letter, make up some silly poems where every word has to start with that letter, there are so many activities you can do with him around a letter or number.
Having said that, however, make sure you are making it fun. Don't make it a chore for him, because that will have the opposite effect. Remember he is still young, it will happen eventually.

Read to him over and over and over. everyday over and over. Is he is preschool? They might be able to help Screan if this is something you need to worry about , or if he is just coming along at his own pace. Lots happens from the time they turn 4 till 5. If he is just 4 that is less to be concerned bout thenif e is 5 next week. It will all come in due time.
