My son is sad because he doesn't get to see his dad..

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

My ex husband relinquished his rights to my son a year ago. Recently my son has started making up little lies/stories about him and his dad. I don't know how to respond to this. I listen and validate his feelings, but I can tell he's hurting. Overall, he's a happy, active, smart kid, but I don't know how to handle this. I don't want this to have a negative effect on him and me not see it. I don't want him to blame me ultimately, and I am so scared I may have done something wrong fur this to happen.

It would be beneficial for your son to know his father. If you put up roadblocks, unfortunately he will blame you as he gets older.

Try to check out that group. It's helpful to her from others. I feel for you in this situation but I think your son needs to know his dad. If dad tells him to his face he doesn't want to see him-- that's another story. Think how things will look from your son's point of view.

Is it possible you could reach out to him or his family? It would make a difference for your son. Don't make it about child support, make it about your son's needs.

Bless your heart, it's never easy. Good luck.

Children need the father figure no matter how bad or uncaring they are. You didn't give your son's age and that may play a part in his stories. How old is your son? I think feedback could be more helpful. There is a live online support group twice weekly at www.pa-of-nj.org. The groups meet at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and 12 noon on Thursdays. That is eastern time or the same as New York. If you live in another time zone you can figure out the time and attend.

Good luck.

Well, it depends. Why did he relinquish his rights? What was the situation before he did this?
