Hello. I have a 9 year old in 3rd grade who is struggling tremendously in school. He does good in math but when it comes to reading and comprehension he really spaces out. He even struggles when it comes to math word problems. His teacher is even staying after school with him to give him extra help but nothing seems to be working. I cannot afford private help. I feel like I might have to home school him. which I am sure I will be stressed out since I can't teach at all. But something has got to work. If anybody has any advice I would really appreciate it. I hate to see him cry and struggle so much every time he does his reading/writing homework.

If he can read about soccer and comprehend the subject matter, then it's seems he just doesn't like what he needs to learn about. Sounds like simple defiance. My Step-Son doesn't like reading anything but comics, and his grades do reflect his dislike of those subjects. But there's a lot of things in life that we have to do that we don't like to do. He better get used to it now, or be really disappointed as an adult. Maybe your son needs consequences for the bad grades, or you can bribe him with some extra fun thing if he completes his work on time.

My SS was unable to use any electronics during spring break because of bad behavior. Was a little hard on the rest of the family not getting to watch TV, but luckily my step-daughter and I read a lot, so we just pulled out books to keep us occupied. If we were on our phones or tablets, then SS complained about how jealous he was that we could do that because he wanted to really bad. And we just said, well maybe next time you'll do better and keep your privileges. We'll see if it worked!

Hello Raye,

He has not been tested for anything. I do work with him at home but does not like reading since its harder to comprehend. He likes to read a lot about soccer. he even reads news reports about his favorite team. That he enjoys. But obviously the stories and poems on the SOL are not about soccer.

Has he been tested for dyslexia or some other reading problem? Do you work with him at home to improve his reading? Is he interested in comic books or anything that might make reading more fun?
