My son Connor was diagnosed with autism today. I was doing my research after his diagnoses and found this site. I don't know how to think or what to do? Hearing those words were so hard. Is my son never gonna be able to drive? Is he gonna be bullied in school for years and years? All these things kept running through my mind so the moms going through this I would like to hear all the different ways you handle this. The doctor told me its almost two years for extensive therapy unless I can come up with almost 30,000 the insurance is the waiting for almost 2 years what to do?

Did they suggest waiting a year and a half? I have heard of ABA. from what i have heard it is one of the better out there. So that is a good start.

I found this for you so you can have some understanding-http://www.autismsupportnetwork.com/news...

As far as money goes, ask around your town try calling catholic charities, look in your phone book i'm sure there is one in your area. Even if they don't help with those items they can help point you in the right direction.

Also, he is 2. So, be glad you know now. You have time. The best thing i can tell you is your son is healthy. This is just one thing you need to worry about. You will learn to be patient with him and with yourself through the process. It is not the end of the world and you are not alone in this.

I myself have a high functioning Autistic..(otherwise known as aspergers.) I didn't even know until he was about 9 years old. (he's now 13)Then it dawned on me. Ask your doctor for resources. Ask him to explain everything to you. S/he is getting paid to do so. Do not feel bad about taking up to much time. You need to understand where you and your son are at.

I know for sure that there is an autism form here. go to my communities at the top in the pink then to join communities and search for autism. They will be able to give more information faster usually.

How old is your son? Did they tell you if he is going to be high functioning or not? This will determine driving and what not. As far as i know, i believe he can but can. He might need a certain teacher for it and he might not want to drive on highways and such. I know of one who does and he does not go over 30 mph. found this for you also- http://www.disabilityscoop.com/2012/01/1...

As far as school goes you have options. I do know there are specialized schools. If none are offered in your area you can look into k-12 schooling. Which basically is homeschooling without all the work on your end. He is part of the school district and they give you curriculum. They test him. He can still join in on all school functions too, dances, sports, attend sporting events. Or put him in regular school and see how he does. He might surprise you. Kids especially at younger ages can be gentle about certain things.

As far as extensive therapy goes, you might want to find out even what forms of therapy they use. Some are still widely used and not seen as effective. I don't know where his functions are at for what. Some don't like to be touched, some don't like noises. No matter where he is, there are many ways for you to help him at home. By the next year you'll learn be the best best at google.
