My son Connor was diagnosed with autism today. I was doing my research after his diagnoses and found this site. I don't know how to think or what to do? Hearing those words were so hard. Is my son never gonna be able to drive? Is he gonna be bullied in school for years and years? All these things kept running through my mind so the moms going through this I would like to hear all the different ways you handle this. The doctor told me its almost two years for extensive therapy unless I can come up with almost 30,000 the insurance is the waiting for almost 2 years what to do?

Amanda,

There is a book by Dr. Bruce Semon in Glendale, Wisconsin, called Feast with Out Yeast and another book called Extraordinary Foods. He has made a connection with autism and ordinary foods that we eat on a daily basis. His son has autism and the doctors told him that they could do nothing more for him. He proved them wrong. He saw dramatic differences in his sons temper and physical appearance when he ate certain foods. It is an amazing story and might give you hope and comfort.

Autism can mean anything from a bit "off" to totally incapacatated. I know many people with autism, myself included who can drive, keep down a good job, raise children, play the saxophone, knit, attend church services, volunteer, think for themselves, although they may have a bit of a time explaining their points.
Chances are that he'll be able to do anything as an adult that you can do.
Certianly, get him into early intervention or whatever variation your school district has. It's not necessarily devastating.
I didn't speak until I was 12, but I had a chaoitc situation in the best of times. As long as you keep the situaiton as calm as possible, things will be fine--eventually
