My boy is two and a half and very lively, sociable, curious and very physical. He jibber-jabbers all the time, but the only things we understand are "daddy", "cars", "bye" and sometimes "doggie". He doesn't even say "mummy"yet! He understands very well and will do most things you ask of him. I am worried, but the NHS has waiting lists of one year at least for speach therapists and the private practices are very expensive...Does anybody have a similar experience? I might mention that I am Italian, so our household is bilingual, but my eldest daughter never had a problem with that...

Thanks for that. I have contacted a private speech therapy practice and see what happens...

Have you had his hearing checked? Do that first. My son has speech apraxia. He hardly talked and often made up words. Some exercises you can do while waiting are blowing bubbles, use different types of cups and straws and making faces in the mirror. Encourage him to speak, when he wants something make him use his voice instead of pointing. Does your school system offer any help? An evaluation is important I understand about expense. We have to pay for therapy sessions, but it has made a huge difference he is now speaking in sentences and almost everyone gets his meaning. Hope this helps a little.
