my toddler has a violent cough. what home remedies can I give him

A teaspoon of honey helps.
This is not natural, but Vicks works pretty well too...rub on chest and throat. (use the child/baby version).
And I agree with Lakota...if the cough is really terrible and/or doesn't subside soon, a visit with the dr may be in order.

If his cough is a "violent" cough, he may need a doctor. I'm all for home remedies, but, for certain illnesses, taking him to a doctor is best.

I just rubbed his neck, chest & back w/ Vaseline & Olive Oil . Gave him 3 tsp of Chamomile tea w/ honey. Also less than a tsp of Olive Oil. I used what I found in my cabinets. I pray this helps him !
