Hello mommies,

I need some advice, My 7 year old son has been having issues at school for 3 yrs now. His school / Dr has said they see the signs of ADHD so we have started him on biphentin almost 2 weeks ago,we saw a little bit of changes no phone calls home from school until today. The things that happen at school are,he leaves the class room without permission, gets very cranky and defiant and refuses to do school work and constantly says "no" to everything and just plain old refusal to listen! Today he was walking out of class with a chair above his head! I am at a loss of what to do and what this could be,he has friends but he does enjoy playing alone sometimes also.He often runs around our backyard after school too in circles,he can be slightly defiant at home but no where near this extreme and is super loving and caring his teachers have told me he is a very sweet caring boy but still seems to just behave poorly I have tried taking things away ,rewards for good behavior does anyone have any advice or ideas what could be going on?

I agree - before medicating, I would go through a thorough exam and observation. Even then, I would hesitate to start medication until other solutions have been tried. I've heard great things from other mom's in your shoes about essential oils and dietary changes affecting the behavior of their children. Taking out processed food, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, colored dyes, etc. Might be worth looking into?

Why would you start a child on meds w/out them being properly diagnosed? Most schools and regular doctors have zero qualifications to diagnose a child w/ ADHD....

What are the consequences at school for what he does?

If he's a specialist in ADHD he should know that a child would need a full evaluation and an actual diagnosis before trying meds. A real expert is not just going to stick a kid on meds to see if that's the problem. They would go through all the tests and processes to get a proper diagnosis.

I have a 7 year old son w/out any of these issues, so I can't really be of more help... Sorry.

Good idea. Something I will for sure ask.

I guess I was trying to see if this IS what ADHD looks like or if anyone else sees this also in their child.Or if it may be something else or he is just not settling into school well? As his specialist said he is showing "sings" of it and suggested trying the meds ( he also said he though my son would "mature" and grow out of these behaviors so Im a little lost/confussed.

Oh... I see. Yeah, specifics are helpful. ;)

I wonder if he would qualify for a one on one aide to help keep him on track...? That might be worth checking into.

Sorry, Maybe i should have been more specific. His DR is an ADHD specialist sorry not our family DR.
Usually a phone call home , or I have to go in and talk to him or pick him up or he eats lunch in the office.
