Hi there. I am a new mom to a beautiful baby boy who is 6 1/2 weeks old. Lately I have found myself constantly terrified that he is going to choke. I hate to put him down after feeding (esp at night) for fear that he will choke on spit up. It's all I seem to think about. He also has been sneezing lately and has coughed a few times. Should I be concerned? No fever or runny nose. But I am so scared of that whooping cough epidemic I keep hearing about, I hardly take him out of the house. And he can't be immunized for another week and a half. I live in MD and the outbreak was in WI, I believe. But, I am still SO SCARED. I live in constant fear that something is going to happen to my baby. Is this normal? How can I relax? We do have 2 cats and 2 dogs and the dander could be causing his sneezing/coughing?. I am a nervous wreck. Always worried. :(

I am afraid you are going to be worrying for the rest of your life. All us mums think of every worse scenario and believe it is going to happen to us. Try and chill. Always make sure your baby is well burped after a feed before putting him down to sleep and always place him on his back so that he can move his head to the side should he be sick.

If your child has been no where near an infected other child it is unlikely that he will catch whooping cough. Most babies have their mothers immunity until they are a couple of months old.

I can assure you what you are feeling is normal, when they get older it is falling, then friends, then fitting in at school, then exams, girlfriends. You name it we will worry about it, thats a mums job!
