I'm a mother of three and i had problems when i breast feed my nipples where black cracked and bleeding after just a few days but i found that nipple shields really helped and after feeding some cold cabbage leafs in my bra for an hour helped to soth them i know it sounds daft but it really helped.

My midwife told me that a thrust infection in my nipples would feel like a stabbing pain (I have never had one so she was telling me what to watch for), it might be a good idea to just visit your local early childhood nurse (or contact the midwives were you gave birth) and get them to not only check out your breasts, but watch how bub is latching on. They might catch a problem that we haven't even thought of!

I hope that you get it sorted out soon. It's no fun bonding with bub when it hurts :o(

It does sound like baby's not latching properly. Get a lactation counsellor to observe you feeding and to check the latch.

Alternatively you could try holding the baby in a different position. Have you tried the football/rugby ball hold ie with the body under your arm. It'seasier for you to see from that position how the baby is latching on.

How is the babies latch? Maybe you just don't have it quite right? I know I had a lot of problems in the first week and a half, but I went and talked to the public health nurses here who walked me through latching properly (I had to go like 4 times) and now I'm all healed up and have no pain!

Nipple shields work wonders for between feedings. This way you can put the Lansinoh on and nothing will rub on your nipple. I think Medela makes the ones that I used.
