I got a grandson that is going to be turning one soon and he will not know the difference either other than there are more bodies around than normal. His sis on the other hand is about to turn 3 so she will know. We never made big deals out of birthday parties for the main reason its too expensive to do so, many people expect things that you are not providing (allowing siblings of invitees to attend, meals, or other things), you can not handle more than a certain number of people, and a lot of other reasons. We kept it simple and to the family only. I have a friend that had kids about the same time I did and would invite her to come with her kids but that was it and besides she is basically family. I do remember a few parties my mom would toss for me and then again a month later for my sister and we had several cousins, a few family friends' kids, and grandparents attend. To us that was a large party but with at least four or five cousins and the same number of friends....it added up. My mom had a cake, some goody bags, ice cream and a few games. No meals or elaborate themes.
