Need to vent: terrible behavior

It's my birthday and we went over my parents' house with other family members. My 2.5 year old was a terror the entire time. Not sharing, having tantrums, whining--just so awful. I am so embarrassed and we left the party early. It feels like everyone else's kids are better behaved. Just needed to vent somewhere.

Just about every mom gets to be "that mom" at some point around then. And its sometimes embarassing... But its totally normal, and some day you'll think back to this day and smile... Because "wow, look how much my kid has learned."
And thats precisely what your child was doing today. :) Learning.

Oh, honey! Hang in there! as the others have said, it's totally normal (if mortifying) behaviour, and as your LO gets older and understands how to verbalize more, things will improve, I promise!

Don't beat yourself up. You're a good parent, and this is just a normal, every day stumble. A lot of the ladies responding to you, myself included, are solid proof that one CAN survive this thing called parenthood, and even come out of it with a sunny disposition on the other side!

Do not let it get to you. It is normal for kids to be like this at this age as they do not have the language skills to help them tell what their thinking and feeling. It takes time for them to gain that vocabulary.

He did have a nap today. All I can think is that he was jealous that grandma and grandpa were giving more attention to other cousins? Ugh, it was humiliating.

You did the right thing in leaving. What time of day was this event taking place? Had your child had a nap prior to going? It is normal behavior though unwanted sort of behavior that kids this age exhibit. And you are just going to have to find ways to handle it including leaving.
