so my son is due in september, at the 12 week scan we were told he has an omphalocele.. which is when organs grow on the outside of the babies body. luckily my sons is small enough to be put back on the inside.. with surgery soon after birth.
i live in napier, nz & i'm having to travel to wellington, nz for his birth so that we both get the appropriate care & treatment + they have the right people to do the surgery.
we've had a specialist from wellington come to napier to scan me & he says that there are no other birth defects at this stage.
i'm now 20 weeks and wondering how soon before my son is due do i pack & leave for the trip?
i don't know how i'm getting there at this stage.
do i need to sort out accomodation for myself & my partner?
i don;t know how much to pack for me & bubs >.< so many questions & i really don't think anyone has the answers :( pleeease help if you can.

I would first figure out how you're getting there. Is it close enough to drive? I'm not familiar with where you are. Once you have figured out transportation then I would start working on accommodations. A due date is just an estimate and unfortunately you could go into labor early or later there is no true way of knowing. I would have a discussion with your doctor and the specialists to see what they recommend as far as how far before your due date you should move yourself closer to the hospital.

Talk to the specialist to see what recovery is going to look like after the surgery, and how long your baby wil be kept in the hospital. I'm not sure if they will let you stay beyond the standard delivery but the hospital should be able to tell you. Unfortunately a lot of this is going to fall on you as far as planning but keep asking the doctors if they aren't giving you answers. Good luck.
