Newborn with a cold...HELP!

My four week old has a cold (lots of congestion, sneezing, coughing). We are treating the symptoms, which get way worse at night. But during the day, the only way I can get him to sleep is on me or my husband (the minute we put him down he starts screaming). He also has a loss of appetite, I think mostly due to the fact that he is so congested. He's wanting to eat about 1 oz. of formula every 30 min.-1 hr., whereas he normally eats 4 oz. every 2.5-3 hours. Does anyone have any advice on how to get him to eat (that's my main concern, I can handle him wanting to be held constantly for a few days). I'm concerned that he won't get enough and it will prolong the cold.

Both of my girls had this and it's VERY common in newborns. They are still coughing up the mucous from birth. They sound horrible I know...did your doctor say he had a cold? If he is eating an ounce every hour that makes up for the 4oz he would be eating. Use one of those plunger things to get the gunk out of his nose and some saline. Also keep him propped up. Sometimes elevating his mattress a little will help, along with a cool mist humidifier.
