Jenn, my mother told me my younger brother used to throw tantrums like that and he would hold his breath until he turned blue, and he would pass out. The passing out is lack of oxygen, the brain shuts the body down and forces breathing again, and a nice influx of oxygen. Don't panic!! If she passes out and is breathing, it is ok. If it is only happening when she is throwing a hissy fit, it is ok (well, not really, but she will be fine). The passing out is her brain telling her "that's enough".

It is very normal for kids to do this. I know a guy who when he was a baby would completely pass out every time he didn't get his way! I know it is really really scary but if you know that nothing is stuck in their throat to stop them breathing they will eventually pass out and automatically start breathing again. Hopefully she doesn't do it again! It would be so hard not to freak out! But try stay calm!

my son had a similar episode like this last night. I handed him to my husband and walked away and he got so upset he went into a silent cry and as I picked him up out of my husbands arms he went limp for a couple seconds and then seemed tired or listless. It was so scary I was ready to call 911 but my husband calmed me down. After 5 minutes he was playing like normal. I am waiting on a callback from his ped today. I have seen some similar threads on this topic and feel I need to just say I am NOT a CIO mom. None of my babies have cried more than 5 minutes. This thing with my son is not him passing out from exhaustion. It's more like a temper tantrum...he is 15 months old. I have a daughter who is 23 and I can recall a story of her crying so hard she passed out when one of my older sisters watched her and I never believed it. And I never let that sibling watch her again.

Sounds like maybe a type of stress induced siezure or something! That's scary! I'd definitely call 911 next time or at least talk to your doctor. If you find that it is not a health concern and just that she's doing it to get attention, that's a different story. My Gramma always told me the story from when my uncle was between 1 and 2 years old, every time they would tell him no, he would scream for a second and flop on the floor , holding his breath until he lost consciousness. It scared her really bad, bu when she realized what he was doing, she put a glass of water in the fridge. The next time he did that , just before he got to the point of passing out, she dumped the water over his head. I know it sounds mean, but she said he NEVER did it again! I hope this problem quickly resolves itself for your sake!

ok.. with the added details i would def talk to your doc tonight or tomorrow am .. if it happens again before then, dont be ashamed to call 911 esp with the not breathing aspect..

its prob not anything that serious, but talk to your doc to be sure.. it hasnt happened to me, but. maybe a reaction to stress or something.. again ask the doctor
