Only child asking for siblings or pets....

My 3 1/2 year old son has been asking for a little brother or sister on a very regular basis lately. Then this weekend he said can I at least have a puppy. His dad (adopting him) and I are getting married in Jan so we are planning to try to have a child after that. Has anyone else run into this issue with their only child? He goes to a daycare center so is around kids his age all day and he has a little cousin who lives down the road from us that he sees regularly.....we can't have dogs or cats at our current residence. Should we look into to getting him some sort of small pet so he has some responsibility?

I would not get a 3 1/2 year old a pet that he is supposed to be responsible for. If you get a pet it will have to be a family pet because a three year old just can't take care of one. Even 9 or 10 year olds have trouble taking care of a pet and being responsible for them.

If you really want a pet for him buy a little pet but make sure it's known as a family pet not HIS pet. When he's older (much older) he can have his own pet. I know it sounds like who cares if it's his or a family pet but HIS pet means he should be taking care of it (which he most likely won't once the novelty wears off), which is to much responsibility.

Plus he might want a sibling now but he'll be singing a different tune once the baby is taking attention away from you. Not saying you shouldn't have another child, just that a 3 year old really doesn't know what he wants.
