Hi Amber its such a daunting journey. My near 3yo son Ellis is going for his third surgery. I have found some very useful sites and connecting with other mums is always helpful. My son has Transposition of great Arteries (TGA)', Pulmonary Valve Stensosis and ASD and VSD. Good lluck with your precious heart xx :)

I don't know what will be harder the actually time spent in the hospital or the last few month and the next few months just spent knowing it is coming up and not knowing how it will go... Any idea to make this time and time in the hospital less stressfull?

Post a reply! My son had open heart surgery at 7 weeks old and will go again in March for 2nd open heart. He is now 8. The surgeons are the best at a childrens's hospital. Don't know where you live or where your child will have the surgery but he is now 8 and though his heart was not able to be corrected completely at 7 weeks. They will repair another problem in March and if he needs another one we will deal with that when the time comes. I can't say enough about the surgeons at Vancouver Children's hospital, you will get all the facts no matter what hospital, they will tell you all the information to do with the surgery, post surgery etc. What is the alternative. He is in the best hands.

It is a very stressful day for the whole family and friends but somehow you get through it.

Hi Amber,
I am sorry you are going to have to go through this with your son. My daughter was 18months old when she had open heart surg. We were living overseas at the time. We had fantastic doctors and a caring staff. She did fantastic and you will be really surprised how quickly he will bounce back from the surgery. My daughter was up and running......... literally running around 3 days after surgery. Children dont know they are supposed to hurt after major surgery and they just get on with life. We adults are the wimps. You will need to take time for yourself, find a book you LOVE to read and make sure you have it handy for the time during surgery. You will only be allowed short periods of time in the NICU or ICU after surgery, so take time to take walks or make phone calls. Get your rest, you will need it to keep yourself healthy.

HI my son had this surgery when he was 15 days old and then he had a cath procedure done at 2 years old and it's not our last. It's absolutly amazing what these kids can endure!Medical care is such and exciting thing-the advances are incredible.Your son will be taken care of very well and have a wonderful outcome!Take care of yourself-I know that isn't really on your mind but it's very important for your son that you do that.Be calm and let him know your there to help him.I didn't feel like eating when he was in the hospital cause I never wanted to leave him-but my hubby kept telling me I needed to take that time for myself and get outside and eat and relax not in the hospital. So I would take about 45 min. for lunch and then about 1 hr for dinner.Watch some tv,go shopping, take a long shower, give a friend a call-that's what I would do to stay sane.Good luck and best wishes!

Hi, Sorry to hear about your little boy, my little girl was born 3 months early and had lots of breathing problems, it was a very stressfull/ scary time. She has had a small operation since but she came through it fine, children are much more resilient than we think. My little girl actually enjoyed her time in hospital for her op, she had fun in the ward playroom and all the nurses etc were great with her. It was my husband and myself who were really scared/ worried for her, she didn't realise what was going on and although was sore and tired after the op she recovered quickly, sure your little boy will be the same.

It is amazing what medical help can be done when nature just needs that little extra support. Best wishes and before you know it, your little man will be riding his bike and climbing trees.

Hi Amber...I am so sorry to hear about your son's condition. My son, Jaeden, was born 2 months early. But thank God he has been as healthy as he can be, he got neither oxygen nor medication. We were very worried when he was born because of all the risks he had, but with time he did just fine. I know I am not going thru a situation like yours, but your son will be in my prayers and your family too. Just hang in there because your baby needs you strong to take care of him. My best wishes and God bless your little angel =)
