My 15 year old son got himself into some legal trouble recently. Because it was his first time he has a 6 month diversion. All he has to do is not get into any legal trouble for 6 months plus some community service and counseling and he is in the clear. He is a smart kid and does well in school so I assumed he would try to straighten up at least for the next 6 months. If he gets into trouble during that time they will take it to court. Nothing has changed with him. He is still smoking pot and sneaking out at night and not coming home until morning. Consequences don't seem to have any effect. We have taken his phone, he will not get his drivers permit until he is clean for 6 months, we never give him cash. Do we just let the natural consequences play out? Is it now all in his hands? Any suggestions?

So tell him its either rehab, or jail, and stick by it.

We have restricted his social life but he just sneaks out. Can't chain him to his bed.

You’re not alone, Dale! Raising teens is always complicated and messy. If your son refuses to cooperate, it may be best to seek professional counselor’s assistance.

Your son did not just go out of control overnight, so if the consequences of no phone, no car, no money, and no social life aren't doing it...Oh, wait, you haven't restricted his social life, from the sounds of it, and that's where he's getting his drugs...

Give him terms and conditions to meet. The first being get and stay clean. Tell him that he can either go to rehab now, or you'll visit him in jail.
