Ovarian Cysts During Pregnancy

I found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago. Last week I was in a great amount of pain and had to go to the hospital. I thought I was having a miscarriage, but infact I had a cyst rupture. The pain was so bad I was given morphine. During an ultrasound they mentioned another one on the other ovary, and set up an appt. for an ultrasound today. Well it is 7-8cm. They didn't mention anything "bad" but set up another ultrasound for 2 weeks time. Has anyone else gone through this. I googled it and it seems that large cysts that don't go away on their own need to be surgically removed. It also mentioned the chance of miscarriage and pre-term labour, so now I am a bit freaked out. Has anyone had this during pregnancy. I have had laser laproscopy three time (not pregnant) to remove cysts, so I feel like the chances of it going away on its own is slim. This has been a really hard couple of week.

Hi jackie,

I know this may sound and be very difficult, but try not to stress to much. When I was three months pregnant with my son I had a 19 by 22 inch cyst on my left ovary. At first I was really scared and not sure how to react, My obstetrition told me pretty much what you had googled, when I was first informed. Please keep in mind though, that all Doctors need to prepare you for the worst case event. After my intial shock and listening to my options, my OB stated if I waited until I was past the first or even second trimester the changes of the baby surviving was more promising, this was also when they felt I could undergo surgery more successfully. I tryed to wait it out but when I was a little over 3 months my cyst ruptured. At this point I really did not have a choice, I under went surgury immediatley. During the procedure in this case they would normally put you under but when you are expecting( in my case) my ob stated I was going to be awake and under a spinal sedation( numb from the waste down so feeling was not there) he told me it was the safest route to take so the baby would not be affected by the medication as much. The Team of Specialist operating on me where wonderful and tryed to make things very comforting for me knowing I was scared and concerned. After my surgery I was placed on observation for 3 days and the baby was montitored, I was given morphinem, and Tylonel for the pain as well as put on Prometrium tablets for several weeks to follow, all turned out great at the end, no complications and my Pregnancy went to right to the expected due date.I know have 2 wonderful kids( son 3 and half and my little girl who is 7 months).

one thing to note- all pregant women get cysts this is what my ob stated- after 3months however they are suppose to reduce in size and disappear. Some don't, this is where they have to monitor the growth to make sure it not maligant.( they will only be able to determine this until after the cyst has fully been removed and sent it to the lab for testing).Your Ob should be able to fill you in on all of this information.Be postive and as mentioned try to stress it will all work out in the end!

Just try and relax and trust in your OB doctors.  What you read on the internet is always more scary sounding than what is actually happening or may happen.  You will be watched by your doctors and be well taken care of.  If you miscarry it is hard, but there's nothing that a woman can do to prevent it.  Worry only makes it worse and you aren't going to enjoy your pregnancy.  Just enjoy each stage as much as possible and pray for strength to cope with whatever comes your way.

When my cyst ruptured, I was 7w2d along. I had cramping, bleeding, etc., so I definitely thought I was having a miscarriage. Unfortunately, I don't know how large mine was.

I know it's hard to relax but try to take it easy. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a facebook message.

I just found out about the cysts during the end of week 5, and now I am in the beginning of week 7.  My biggest fear is that I will have a miscarriage, as this one is so large, and I had such a hard time when the last one ruptured.  It is a very scary time right now....the only good thing is that I got to see my wee little baby on the last ultrasound...he/she is soooo tiny and has a heartbeat now.  I just need to try and relax and take it easy, which is very very hard for me to do.

I've had a couple cysts on each of my ovaries when I was pregnant with my son. I also had a fibroid tumor inside my uterus growing next to my baby. I was freaked out at first telling myself why do I have this? The pain was really bad as my belly got bigger and my son growing putting presure. The doctors told me they go away or shrink. After I had my son, my ovaries still hurt and I finally went in for another ultrasound and they said they needed to remove a couple of the cysts. I had to take some medicine afterwards..I think it was some kind of steroid type, which made me gain weight and my boobs got huge. I'm pregnant again and I don't feel the way I did with my son. I already had the first ultrasound done and they didn't see anything.

How far along were you in your pregnancy when you had these cysts? For the first 10 weeks, every pregnant woman has ovarian cysts, or at least that is what my OB said before I had my miscarriage.

When I was pregnant with Liam, I had a cyst rupture as well so I can uderstand the pain you are talking about.

Hope you feel better!
