Pacifier loving 1yo = poor sleeper!

Our third child, who just turned 1yo last month, is our worst sleeper yet. He wakes up at least twice a night still; and yes, he's a pacifier baby. I refuse to let him walk around with it in his mouth but I do find my mother-in-law allowing him to; he only gets it for naptime or bedtime at home. So I need suggestions as how to break him of the pacifier and then I'm praying that he will sleep ALL NIGHT!

Is he waking up because the pacifier falls out and he can't find it? If you are still okay with him having the pacifier at night time, put a couple in bed with him so he can find one when he wakes. If you are ready to wean baby off the pacifier, make sure that every one that cares for baby is on the same page. It won't work if baby is getting pacifier from one person. You can just do the disappearing method or you can let baby put the pacifiers away himself. The disappearing method is just not being able to find a pacifier when baby asks for one. This may result in some frustration on babies part in the beginning, but will get easier. If you give baby some of the power, you may find the transition a little easier. Be ready to provide a stuffed animal or blanket as a replacement for the comforting pacifier. And be prepared for baby to find his thumb. The youngest little boy I nanny for was a pacifier baby. But his Mom didn't want him to be dependent, so we were done with pacifiers around 10 months. The only problem was the baby wasn't done needing the comfort that sucking on something provided. Within a week of the pacifier being taken away he began sucking his thumb. We now have a 4 year old who sucks his thumb with a vengeance, even though he has a lovely, he still sucks his thumb. You may have to let him cry it out a few nights. Wishing you luck!
