My friend recently lost her 4 year old daughter to cancer and since then I've become very aware of things that I can do to help keep the 'monster' at bay. I thought this might be of interest to other moms.
I have discovered, much to my horror that almost all of the lotions and potions we lather onto our skins to keep us moisturised and squeeky clean contain parabens. If you read the backs of most of the products in your bathroom cabinet they contain things like methalparaben etc. Apparently these preservatives and active ingredients contain estrogen which can accelarate cancer in your body, especially if you have a history of it in your family. Not only is the cancer aspect a reality but the estrogen can affect our children's hormones negatively, especially little boys (I have two). Makes me quite glad that I wasn't an avid moisturising person when I was pregnant as who knows how many chemicals I may have inflicted on my unborn male children.
I know the first world countries are addressing this problem and the paraben free range of products is quite large and growing steadily. I was so pleased to discover a range of products in South Africa that are not only paraben free but affordable. I have thus recently chucked out all the stuff in my bathroom cabinet and replaced it with the safer and organic option. I feel that not only am I doing my bit for my family's wellbeing but we are also helping the environment too by eliminating all these chemicals.
Has anybody else heard anything about Parabens?
