I used to smoke cigarettes a lot but worked really hard and quit for 2 years, for my kids. Recently, for whatever reason, I started again. I never wanted my kids to know that mommy smoked but tonight my 6 year old said that he knows that I smoke when I go outside. I'm heart broken! Should I lie to maintain the reputation I wish I had? Do I act like it never happened? WHAT DO I DO??! I'm lost and just want my son to think that he has the best mom in the world! Please help!

Thank you so much Chef MC - it will difficult, I know, but you're probably right. Thank you for your honest and compassionate response to a perfect stranger

Apologize to your son and be completely honest. Tell him that he should never start smoking because it's so hard to stop. Tell him that it's unhealthy and you smoke outside to keep it away from him, and because you're embarrassed and regret smoking. Tell you him that grown ups make mistakes sometimes.

Nobody is perfect and kids need to know that. Kids also need to learn how to own up to mistakes and to speak honestly to the people they love. You'll be setting a good example for you son by talking opening with him.

And if you're ready to quit again, tell him that too.
