My daughter is one month old. By her 3rd day home from the hospital, she started having 4-5 hour screaming fits every late afternoon / evening. She seemed to be very gassy and in pain. We had started on Similac formula in the hospital, so we switched to a "gentle" formula to see if that helped her. We also tried gas drops and gripe water, and neither helped. At her two week checkup, I told the doctor about what was going on and he said that she didn't have the "classic" symptoms of anything so he wasn't sure what the problem was. He told us to try different formulas, try putting a little cereal in her bottle, and gave us a prescription for Axid, an acid reflux medicine, to try if nothing else worked. He said that some babies don't throw up, even though they have reflux. He also said it could just be colic.... We switched formula again, to a "sensitive" one, with low lactose. This did seem to help a little, but we still had almost daily screaming fits. We also tried the cereal, and the reflux medicine, with no noticable difference. On a particularly bad day, I went out and bought Nutramagin formula. This seemed to help the gas a LOT, but after a full day on it, she had a horrible diaper rash (almost looks like a burn). We have stuck with this formula and done the best we could with the diaper rash. Constant changes and diaper cream. The last three days or so, she has seemed to be pooping almost constantly, and is back to seeming to be in pain. She doesn't even sleep peacefully or soundly anymore. She will grunt, grimace, cry out in pain, even in her sleep! It's VERY hard to get her to sleep for more than a few minutes, most of the time. She often twists her head/neck, like something is bothering her throat and sometimes seems to be clearing her throat. She swallows a LOT, even when she's not eating! (Sign of reflux?? Post nasal drip??) She has been congested for about a week and a half (before we started the Nutramigen) and it seems to be in her chest, not her nose. She has no fever or other signs of being sick.

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on what this could be??? (I will be calling my doctor for an appointment today, just wanted to see if anyone out there had any input!)

Thanks Gemma! We will definitely try a prescription formula if the doctor thinks it's a good idea! I'm willing to try anything!

I have a friend who's baby had simular problems really bad screaming fits thought was colic but nothing helped. So was then diagnosed with reflux and medication for it but again never really helped still cried with really bad belly pains and threw her head back in pain,Srew up her legs and had green poo alot..

After 5 weeks they now realise that ordinary milk from over the counter doesn't agree with her and had been prescribed milk from the hospital now which at last seem to have done the trick.

Horrible when they in pain and nothing really can be done. But if i was you i would keep going back to the doctors or a walk in center as you baby seem to be in discomfort.

If it is just cloic my daughter had this and she wou;d cry around the same time every evening around 6pm to 9pm be4 it eased off..Colic drops never works so had to ride it out. She grew out of it by 8/9 weeks

Hope you soon get your baby settled goodluck all the best :D
