My daughter is one month old. By her 3rd day home from the hospital, she started having 4-5 hour screaming fits every late afternoon / evening. She seemed to be very gassy and in pain. We had started on Similac formula in the hospital, so we switched to a "gentle" formula to see if that helped her. We also tried gas drops and gripe water, and neither helped. At her two week checkup, I told the doctor about what was going on and he said that she didn't have the "classic" symptoms of anything so he wasn't sure what the problem was. He told us to try different formulas, try putting a little cereal in her bottle, and gave us a prescription for Axid, an acid reflux medicine, to try if nothing else worked. He said that some babies don't throw up, even though they have reflux. He also said it could just be colic.... We switched formula again, to a "sensitive" one, with low lactose. This did seem to help a little, but we still had almost daily screaming fits. We also tried the cereal, and the reflux medicine, with no noticable difference. On a particularly bad day, I went out and bought Nutramagin formula. This seemed to help the gas a LOT, but after a full day on it, she had a horrible diaper rash (almost looks like a burn). We have stuck with this formula and done the best we could with the diaper rash. Constant changes and diaper cream. The last three days or so, she has seemed to be pooping almost constantly, and is back to seeming to be in pain. She doesn't even sleep peacefully or soundly anymore. She will grunt, grimace, cry out in pain, even in her sleep! It's VERY hard to get her to sleep for more than a few minutes, most of the time. She often twists her head/neck, like something is bothering her throat and sometimes seems to be clearing her throat. She swallows a LOT, even when she's not eating! (Sign of reflux?? Post nasal drip??) She has been congested for about a week and a half (before we started the Nutramigen) and it seems to be in her chest, not her nose. She has no fever or other signs of being sick.
Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on what this could be??? (I will be calling my doctor for an appointment today, just wanted to see if anyone out there had any input!)
