*hugs* It's hard on Mom when the kid's sick. He'll get to feeling better and just having you around to cuddle with and soothe him is helping. :)

If it's a virus there's nothing you or the doctor can do but give it time.

Possible ear infection?? Everytime my daughter cut a tooth she got an ear infection, fever, runny nose, cough and would wring her head from side to side like she was in pain. They often open their mouths like a silent scream when they have these. Plus they drool like mad. Try ibuprofen or infant tylenol which should help with pain.

What I learned quickly about sick children is don't worry about their food intake. You need to make sure they are drinking plenty in order to avoid dehydration. What always made my son feel better when he was sick with a fever was a nice luke warm bubble bath. The bubbles helped him have a little fun and the luke warm water helped bring his temp down whenever it sky rocketed near 105.0. As far as medicine definitely check with your doctor. Every child is different and different combination of meds can have different reactions for different children. I remember when my son had a nasty virus which gave him a high fever for a little over a week. Of course I panicked and kept calling the doctor. She told me what to do and that was plenty of fluids and lots of baths. It worked great. She did tell me to also give him his meds only at night as the baths would help control his fever during the day. I read a few posts about hot showers and humidifiers, just be careful with those as it can cause a child's fever to sky rocket. A cool mist humidifier will help him breath easier and it will help with his cough. The coolness will help with any swelling in his throat from all the coughing. Also the moisture will help open up his nostril passages. I hope your son feels better soon. Also a second opinion never hurts.

What teething gel do you have? Baby bonjela is good as it doesn't harden the gums. Dentinox hardens gums, which makes teething worse. Have you tried New Era Teething tablets? You can get them at Boots or online. They are £5.05 or slightly more in boots, but they are so totally worth it. We are on our second/third bottle of them. I keep one upstairs in the room and one downstairs. I did give it to her every 15 minutes. But now she can ask for them.

At bedtime, I would give her pain medicine 30 minutes before bedtime so that way if she woke up at 1 - 3 am, I could give her more. I tried calpol, but she hated it and seemed to like the banana flavored one from Wilko's. I haven't tried nurofen so I can't tell you how that is.

Fennel tea will really help your son. It sounds strange but it does. I would give it to her room temp or slightly cooler so it didn't keep her gums hot.

Offer food but don't expect him to eat much during this time. If he is sick and teething, you'll be lucky if he eats anything.

I hope things get better for you. If he is teething his molars, then I am sorry to say it will be a long bumpy ride for all of you.

Jen, Kate is right--if your little guy has a virus then all you can do is wait it out. From what you described a bit later, it does sound like he may be cutting teeth at the same time, making for a miserable little boy. Even that will pass!

In the meantime treat the symptoms, especially the pain he seems to be having. As suggested already, honey and lemon (approximately 1-2 teaspoons each in a cup of warm water) can really help sooth sore throats and coughs. Popsicles or frozen fruit juice are another good way to sooth throats and sore gums. This is a good way to provide extra fluids, too. And don't forget chicken noodle soup! Every one feels better after a nice warm bowl of chicken noodle soup (homemade if you can, a good quality canned soup otherwise). It provides fluids and nutrition all at the same time. While it's tough watching our kids be sick, patience can be your best parenting tool with this--you may need to just wait until his body heals itself. Provide plenty of food and liquids, treat the pain as needed and make sure that he is getting plenty of rest (you too).

If there is no change in his symptoms by Monday, consult back with your doctor. If his symptoms worsen however, take him to an urgent care clinic or the ER to make sure that the virus hasn't fostered a bacterial infection as well. Bacterial infections CAN be treated with antibiotics. Hope this helps and best wishes for everyone!

He may have a sinus infection....or it may be his teeth. My LO always got a runny nose and cough when she was cutting teeth. I'm leaning more towards infection though. Is his mucuous clear?

Hi Jen, you poor things!! Has your little one had the temp for the entire time since Tues? If it is a high temperature then I would be getting him to see someone as soon as you can. If it isn't too high then that is his bodies way of fighting off the virus he has. I would be having lots of steamy showers (room closed, really hot to fill the room with steam then jump in with him to help clear his chest. Lots of vicks (on the feet with socks on is an old wives tale but can help sometimes). Do you have a heater in his room at night - helps to keep the air warm and hence cut down the coughing. My little man recently had gastro - we brought a mattress into the loungeroom and camped there for 5 days - he would fall asleep next to me and I would fall asleep too. Try some honey in warm water also - helps with the cough and add some lemon if he has a sore throat. Let him eat whatever he wants whenever. Viruses can unfortunately take more than a week to pass - but if he has a really high temp or is still crying in pain after 1 hour after having pain relief then definately take him to see someone.
On a different note - has he got his 2 year old molars yet? Could this possibly be contributing to his illness? My little one always gets a cold, cough, grizzles, slight temp whenever he is teething - his canines caused a really nasty cold which lasted for more than a week, i'm not looking forward to his back molars!! During these times I sleep on a mattress beside his cot so when he wakes in slight pain he knows I am right there and it seems to help.
Good luck I hope your little one starts to feel better soon and that you both get some much needed sleep!!

i would be taking this little boy to the hospital - immediately.. it doesn't sound like he is getting any better - take care :)

You can give infant paracetamol and infant ibruprophen as well to combat the pain. Try and encourage him to eat something even if it is junk just to get some food into his stomach as the pain relief will give him an upset stomach if there is nothing in his tummy to work on. At nights if the cough is worse then try and put some steam into his room to help put moisture into the atmosphere. Obviously this is difficult so make sure it is safe. My advice is to try and get some sleep when he does and if things still don't get better take him back to the doctors for peace of mind.
