Why do you feel guilty?
You didn't do it on purpose,if that is in fact what he has.
Is he crying more than usual?I think if you say it hurts,he would think it hurts too.
This is what they look like

Does he use a pacifier? It could be from that or maybe a bug bite, maybe it is irritated if he was chewing on a toy...
Babies get weird rashy things all the time.
Just watch it like the Dr told you to do and if he seems like he is in pain or gets a fever, call them back

He is probably fine...thankfully he is over 3 months old.
Did you talk to the Dr or the "nurse"?
The "nurse is usually just a medical assistant (that is what they called us at the pediatrician office I worked for)

If you did not talk to the Dr than I would call back and ask if they could have the Dr call you back.
What state are you in?
Most states have a childrens hospital and a nurse line you can call for free, and they are usually RN or LPN that answer those calls.

You could always go to urgent care when your b/f gets home.
But calm down momma...it is probably fine :)

It can become very serious for your baby, as Krista said. Call your doctor.

However, it is less likely for them to have severe complications after they are 3 months. It is, however, still very important to bring them to the doctor.

According to this article a child under 6 months rarely gets "true" cold sores. It can happen, though.

Alura, I wasn't criticizing you. I was simply saying that in cases like this, it's always better to find out for sure, rather than driving yourself nuts worrying about it. (And how was I to know that you don't have access to a vehicle?) Sorry if it came across as mocking, because that DEFINITELY wasn't my intent.

I dont really appreciate your attitude towards me being upset krista. i share a car with my fiance and hes at work so i really dont have any access to anything right now. thats kind of why im on this website to get advice from mothers who might know what i can do for him at this point.

Calm down, treat your cold sore, and call your pediatrician to find out what's recommended for babies.

Cold sores are not the end of the world, and I truly haven't ever heard of anyone dying from one...It's really ok. Easily treated in adults, and my only hesitation with using the same thing on the baby is whether or not he could handle the injestion of the salve.

Call your doctor right now. In an infant that young, the herpes simplex virus can spread to the brain. Better to check and if needed, get some antivirals into him, then to sit there and fret and cry and panic.
