I routine trained my daughter (at 10 months). When she was able to go on her own (12 months) I used bare bum and we completely stopped using diapers around 13 months when it got hardcore training. So my advice is to get rid of all diapers/pull ups and just use underwear, I also say to day and night train at the same time so they don't hold anything till they get a diaper. Poop training is a little harder and I found myself giving my daughter a small candy for every poop in the potty (hoping to stop that once she is 2). Don't give up, you have to be consistent. Have an open door policy (so he can see you go potty), praise for trying. Accidents will be pretty bad for the first few days, for us it was 3 days of more accidents on the floor than in the potty, but it will get better. I'm not sure about boys too much (I've never trained them and my mom had hers trained at 1, so no advice there) also I'm not sure about the age either, my daughter is only 1, so not even close to 3 yet. I would say that he is old enough to help clean up accidents. Good luck!
