My son is almost 3 1/2 years old and we can still not get him potty trained. We have tried bribery (buy a new toy or favorite candy, put it where he can see it but not touch it, don't give it to him until uses potty), we have tried punishment (time outs or a smack on the behind when he wets/poops his pants), we've tried the "take him every half hour" strategy, the "reward him for staying dry" strategy, the "tell him he can't go to school like the other big boys" strategy. NOTHING WORKS!!! He yells and fights me and cries when I make him sit on the potty and I just don't know what to do! When he does sit on the potty he will hold it for the 5-15 minutes I make him sit, then get up and pee/poop his pants. We've tried teaching him to stand and "aim at cheerios" and we've also tried the "sit and hold your pee-pee down" but he doesn't like either method. My husband and I are just so frustrated. Please, anyone, is there a technique we haven't tried already that will work? I will try just about anything! (And FYI, he has been wearing underwear for weeks and the "wet/poopy feeling" doesn't bother him at all) Thank you for your help!

#1 is he in big boy undies 100% during the day no matter how many accidents he has? You need to throw all diapers/pull ups away except for at night ONLY!! You need to set a timer and take him in every 20mins. Lots of praise for something done.

However, it sounds like he may need a small break forcing him to sit on the potty when he obviously doesn't want to is going to only delay the process even longer. So give it a week and try again. Never get angry, so hard I know. It will only delay the process even more by putting extra stress on your son.

It's called the 3 Day Potty Training Method. I think you can download it off the internet, but it costs money to do so. But since you guys are friends :o) I am happy to share my copy with you.

Tracy - do you have a name for the method you used? I'm just starting my son and I would love to try your method.

There is a method that worked for my daughter (we trained her at 3yrs, 4months old) and she got it in three days :o) I have a copy in pdf format, I can email it to you if you send me your email.

I would have your son watch you and your husband go to the bathroom. It seems that kids love to copy their parents in everything they do.

So you don't feel alone, my son is 3 1/2 and REFUSES to go. Whatever you do, DON'T spank him for going in his pants. Some kids take longer to realize how to tell you about the feeling of "having to go" then actually "going". I have tried everything as you have, AND my son is in school (pre K) and still he isn't phased. All he does is tell me "I pooed" and never before hand. GRRRR! Good luck and don't feel alone. I think both our kids will go when they are ready, and hopefully soon!!!!!!!!!!!
