Throw some Cheerio's in the toilet and ask if he can sink them. Or use red food coloring in the water that will turn orange when he pees (or blue food coloring will turn green). For poops, maybe put a drawing of a racetrack on the wall. Every time he poops in the potty, place a sticker on the racetrack. When the stickers get to the end of the track, he gets a toy as a reward.
If he's just not telling you when he has to go potty, maybe use a kitchen timer to remind you both to check whether he needs to go. Start with 20 minutes. If, after that time, he says he doesn't need to go, then set the timer for 5 or 10 more minutes and try again. He may get annoyed that you keep asking him and eventually tell you he needs to go before the timer goes off. Once he goes, reset the timer to a longer time. You will get a feel for how often he needs to go and how long you need to set the timer for.
Remember to praise them for being good when they use the potty.
